General Description

When leaders commit to transforming an organization to “be lean”, what does it mean? How does one begin? How do you know where you are on the journey and what is it like when you “get there?” These and many more questions are often heard throughout the lean community. The truth is, it varies in every situation and there truly is no end, as we can always continue to learn and evolve.

While there is no “magic ball” to tell us precisely where we are today or what to do next, we can subjectively assess the lean culture of an organization. That said, it is important to understand there are a vast array of lean concepts, behaviors, systems and tools that can be seen in a variety of ways and to varying degrees in any organization. To say that one organization is “assessed” to be at particular phase of their lean journey and have it mean exactly the same thing for another organization that is “assessed” to be in the same phase is almost impossible; as there are far too many dynamic and complex attributes that differentiate the organizations. However, while we cannot compare exact “apples-to-apples” of one organization to another, we can synthesize similar types of expected attributes and related behaviors in order to help us better understand where an organization is currently and provide some options for where to go next in order to continue to build a lean problem-solving culture. Of course, the choices of where to focus can be daunting, if not overwhelming.

This workshop will help you to better understand where your organization is today and identify some reasonable targets for the future by providing you with an assessment tool that can be used to objectively (or subjectively?? How much scientific evidence is behind it?) evaluate your company’s current lean capabilities and help you to create realistic goals for where to focus on next. In addition to the lecture portion of this workshop, you will have the opportunity to complete a “Lean Journey Self-Assessment Tool”, and have time for open dialogue and reflection through team exercises. At the end of the day, members of the workshop will create an action plan with preliminary goals established in order to move ahead at a pace that you feel is appropriate for your organization.

At the end of this workshop, you will:

  • Understand the attributes associated with a lean culture and how they work together
  • Complete a “Lean Journey Self-Assessment Tool”
  • Identify where your organization is on their journey
  • Highlight the strengths and weaknesses of these lean attributes
  • Identify short-term and/or long-term goals
  • Create an action plan with specific areas of focus with a timeline

Who Should Attend?

  • Individuals or teams that want to gain a better understanding of the attributes within a lean organization
  • Individuals or teams with little-to-moderate experience and exposure to lean who are looking to increase their understanding of the various components of a lean culture
  • Managers who want to gain a better understanding of the total scope for what a lean culture can look like as it continues on the journey
  • Leaders who want to assess where they are today and create a plan of action for where they can aim to be next
  • Anyone who wants to use a quantifiable tool to compare and contrast year-over-year results as they continue on their lean journey

Whether you are starting out, strengthening, or reinvigorating your lean efforts within your organization this workshop will provide you with a tool to better understand where you are today and what your future can look like.
